Under cloudy skies and on a rain soaked trail the American River 50-Mile Endurance Run got underway for the 39th year Saturday morning. Close to 500 runners began the epic 50 mile course at the Brown’s Ravine Marina in Folsom and ended at the Auburn Overlook Park. For the third year a 25-mile endurance run began at Beal’s Point on Folsom Lake also ending at the Overlook Park with close to 200 participants.
The 50-mile race was won by Michigan resident Zachary Ornelas. The 26 year old ran a tight race with second place finisher Coree Woltering of Illinois. The two battled back and forth for the entire race.
“This was the most intense finish, I ran with him (Woltering) for 15 miles and then surged between 15 and 25 miles, struggled between 30 and 40 miles and he led between 35 and 40 miles then I ran my race to the finish and got him at mile 45,” said Ornelas. “It was now or never, just lucky, I dug down.”
Ornelas finished the 50 miles in 6:22:50; Woltering finished the course in 6:39:10. Rod Bien of Bend, Ore., was third with a time of 7:02:02. The first local finisher was fourth-place finisher Derek Poirier of Auburn. Poirier’s time was 7:16:23.
Coming all the way from Beatrice, Zimbabwe, Emily Hawgood made the trip worthwhile, winning the women’s side. Hawgood was eight overall with a time of 7:44:25. “It was amazing, great, perfect weather for me, everyone was supportive,” said Hawgood. Finishing second was Katie Krehlik of Anchorage AK. Her time was 8:18:00 and third was Lisa Daane of Reno NV with a time of 8:51:58.
Running his 38th AR 50, missing only the first race, local resident and endurance running legend Tim Tweitmeyer finished the course in 11:14:14. Also running his 34th AR 50 well known local endurance runner Bill Finkbeiner completed the course in 10:56:27. The oldest registered runner was 83-year-old Manuel Loverde of Sacramento, who ran the 25-mile course in 8:02:51. The youngest runner was 15-year-old Ben Edwards of Granite Bay, who finished the 50-mile course in 11:38:27.
The 25-mile course was won by Jeff Auwinger of Granite Bay with a time of 3:46:00. The first woman to cross the 25-mile finish line was Lisa Sickman of Sacramento who was fourth overall with a time of 4:01:07. “I don’t think the rain hurt the course that much, it loosened it up some for the runners, and it is trail running after all,” said race director Julie Fingar.
