Colfax High’s wrestling season is underway with the Falcons in action last weekend at the Ponderosa JV Team Dual tournament.
Notable efforts by the Falcons included Ken Mathe, a sophomore, who went 4-0 and pinned four of his opponents in the heavyweight class. Three of Mathe’s pins were chalked up in the first round.
In addition, freshman Cory Wilhelm also went undefeated for the tournament with a 5-0 record with all pins in the 189-pound weight class.
Other wrestlers who attended the meet and wrestled well were Charlie Perry, a freshman, and Mike Proctor who went 2-3, pinning one of his opponents and winning by decision his other mach.
In earlier Colfax action, the Falcons’ varsity team ventured to Half Moon Bay for its first tournament of the season and Vinny Corralejo wrestled to a 6th place finish.
This weekend the varsity will be attending the Casa Robles Varsity tournament and the JV Squad will be attending the Whitney JV/Novice tournament
Frosh boys pick up first victory
Colfax High’s frosh boys basketball team defeated Natomas, 71-57, last Friday to notch its first win of the season. The victory came in the second round of the Mesa Verde freshman tournament.
Matt Larson poured in 21 points, Taylor Dorsey added 17 and Devin Loomis and Wade Lewis both followed with 14 and 13 respectively to spark the victory.
Colfax then fell 56-46 to Antelope in the consolation game. Playing without Larson, the Falcons fell behind by more than 20 points before an 18-2 fourth quarter run made the final count respectable.
Loomis tallied 20 points to pace the Falcons’ effort while Dorsey scored nine and Lewis eight.
In the first round of the tournament, Colfax dropped a 53-36 contest to Vista del Lago of Folsom. Loomis’ 13 points and 10 from Dorsey led the Falcons.
Colfax hosts Forest Lake Christian today in a non-league game at 3:30 p.m.
JV boys take third at Del Oro tourney
Luke Beninga and Paul Ramseth each scored nine points to lead a balanced Colfax JV boys basketball attack last Saturday as the Falcons defeated Whitney, 39-34, in the third place game of the Del Oro JV Tournament in Loomis.
Colfax went 2-1 in the tournament with an opening round win over Forest Lake Christian and a semi-final round setback to eventual tournament champion Del Oro.
The Falcons’ win over Whitney also saw Colfax receive eight points from Austin Young, seven by Will Buell, four from Brett Fowler and two from Ryan Glazner.
Colfax had opened tourney play by handing Forest Lake a 54-33 defeat.
In the semi-final against Del Oro, the talented Golden Eagles raced out to a big 43-15 halftime lead before the Falcons made things respectable by outscoring the hosts 37-32 in the second half for a 75-52 final.
Both Beninga and Young were named to the all-tournament team.
