The athletic program at Colfax High this school year has accomplished a lot.
For a school that had not won a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section championship in some four years, the Falcons this season have reached six CIF section championship finals, winning three, and just for fun also added a CIF State boys ski championship banner to their growing achievements.
Last Wednesday, the Colfax High co-ed tennis team came within a whisker of adding a fourth CIF crown – the Falcons have CIF titles this season in boys cross country, volleyball and girls basketball – when the Falcons were nipped in the co-ed Div. II finals in Stockton by Riverbank, 5-4.
“The kids played just a great match,” said Colfax coach Paul Phillips. “A couple of matches could have gone either way, but we never quit.”
Riverbank dominated the singles matches by taking three out of four as only Colfax’s Sara Detwiler, in girls No.1, was able to pullout a win.
In boys doubles, the team of Aiden Gilfillan and Jared brewer posted a 6-3, 6-1 win, while Jake Green and Tucker Klopotek notched a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Colfax also received a doubles victory in girls No. 2, with Caleigh McClenahan and Amber Hult scoring a 6-2, 6-1 win.
