Del Oro’s boys tennis team pulled out a first-round CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II playoff win by taking a nailbiter Monday afternoon in Loomis.
The Golden Eagles, the fourth-place finishers from the power-laden Sierra Foothill League, used strong singles play at the top of their ladder and then depth in the doubles department to squeak out a 5-4 win over Inderkum.
The win for No. 7 seed Del Oro boosts the Golden Eagles into a quarterfinal match in Elk Grove on Friday, where the Black and Gold will battle No. 2 seed Laguna Creek.
For Del Oro, the Golden Eagles’ top three singles players all notched wins, although two of the victories came in hard-fought three-set matches.
At No. 1, Del Oro’s Sam Frank turned back Inderkum’s Archie Gashemi, 6-3, 7-5. Frank, a senior, has played at No. 1 for the Golden Eagles for most of the season.
In the No. 2 singles match, Del Oro’s Lukas Mosher, a junior, clipped Ariel Hernandez 6-7, 7-5, 6-2, while at No. 3, freshman Logan Strough downed Dayne Lagazo, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Inderkum took the next three singles matches as Patrick Rodriguez downed the Eagles’ Rylan Dunmore, 6-2, 6-0 at No.4, Matt Ignacio topped Trevor Dubose 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 and Davison Hu downed Trenton Macktinger, 6-0, 6-3.
The Golden Eagles then turned to its doubles teams to pull out the win. Leading the way was the No. 1 combo of Kekoa Wong and Joe Khaklan, who defeated Erick Mendoza and Amol Budirhaja, 6-2, 6-1.
Del Oro’s Blake Barba and Kody Green, playing in the No. 3 match, then cinched honors for the Golden Eagles with a 6-1, 6-2 trouncing of Zhilad Liu and Brandon Bui.
In a close match at No. 2 doubles, Del Oro’s Max Ahlquist and Ethan Vosberg fell to William Roseffeld and Shirad Nandi, 7-5, 7-6.
In other Div. II first round matches on Monday, River City blanked Vintage, 9-0; Rocklin whitewashed Armijo, 9-0; Gregori topped Bear Creek, 8-1 and Pitman defeated Tracy 8-1.
