Vista girls preparing for showdown Friday with Christian Brothers
After beating Christian Brothers for the first time in seven years in 2017, Vista del Lago’s varsity girls’ basketball team lost both Capital Athletic League games to the Falcons last year and neither game was close.
The Falcons are the defending league champions, finishing a perfect 10-0 a year ago. They’re off to a 2-0 start in league this season and are 10-4 overall. On Friday, the Falcons play their first league road game of the season at Vista del Lago. The Eagles (2-1, 14-5), coming off an encouraging performance against Sac High and a win over Del Campo, are eager to see where they stand with the Falcons.
“It’s a big game,” Vista coach Marty Benjamin said. “They’re always one of the top teams in the league, and we’re going to have to play well to win. I think if we play like we did against Sac High, we’ve got a chance to win. We’re going to have to shoot better than we did against Del Campo. We will have to play a complete game.”
The Eagles defeated Del Campo on Tuesday, 35-19. About the only thing the Eagles didn’t do well was shoot the basketball, as they made only 12-of-41 shots, including 1-of-9 from the three-point line and 8-of-20 from the foul line. They only turned the ball over 12 times.
“We didn’t play badly, we just could not make an outside shot,” Benjamin said. “I liked the shots we got; we got good looks, but we just couldn’t score.”
Lindsey Moody led Vista with 13 points. Ceonna Pipion scored seven, while Mia Perez finished with five.
Now, the Eagles have two practices to prepare for a big home game against Christian Brothers on Friday.
