Oak Ridge girls' basketball opens league with 57-40 win over Granite Bay
Oak Ridge’ 57-40 win over Granite Bay Friday night was truly a story of two halves.
The Trojans scored only 15 points in the first half and trailed by seven at the break, but turned the tables on the Grizzlies in the second half, scoring 42 points, while holding them to 18 to go on to win easily, 57-40.
Obviously, Oak Ridge coach Steve White was pleased with his team’s performance in the second half. The biggest difference, however, was that they just began making shots.
“We just couldn’t get anything to go in the basket in the first half,” White said. “In the second half, we just made more shots. Teagan (Brown) led us in scoring with 14 points, and all 14 came in the second half. We also played better defense in the second half and rebounded better.”
Oak Ridge (1-0 in league, 12-5 overall) featured balanced scoring, as Lauren Helwig scored 12 points; Erica Ingram finished with 11, Sophie Olson had nine, while Megan McConnell scored six.
The win got the Trojans off to a good start in the Sierra Foothill League with a pair of tough games this week; at Del Oro on Wednesday and home against Whitney on Friday. Whitney opened up league play with a 65-61 win over Del Oro.
“We’ve still got to find a way to play as close to a 32-minute game as we can,” White said. “This league is tough this year, and if you decide not to play, you could lose to anyone.”
